Welcome to CMSSA! We are so glad you're here and want you to know that you are an important part of our school community.

As school counselors, we understand that military life can bring unique challenges — from moving to new places to adjusting to change. Please know that we are here to support you every step of the way. Whether you need help making new friends, keeping up with schoolwork, or just someone to talk to, our doors are always open.

At CMSSA, we are proud to support our military-connected students and honor the unique challenges that come with military life. One of the ways we do this is by following the guidelines of the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3), which ensures that students from military families receive a smooth and fair transition when moving between states.

We work closely with families to ensure:

• Students are given the opportunity to join extracurricular activities as soon as they enroll, without penalty for missed tryouts or sign-ups caused by a PCS (Permanent Change of Station) move.
• Our staff communicates with coaches, sponsors, and program leaders to facilitate a smooth transition and immediate involvement for your child.
• We consider the full student experience—not just academics—and strive to make every student feel included, connected, and supported from day one.
• Our Military Family Liaison is available to assist with any questions, concerns, or advocacy related to MIC3 rights and school involvement.

If your child is interested in joining an activity but you’ve recently relocated and missed a deadline, please contact the military Liaison. We are here to support you every step of the way.

Our staff is committed to making this process as smooth and supportive as possible for your family. Whether you’re here for a short tour or a long-term assignment, your child’s academic success and well-being are our top priorities.

At CMSSA, we provide:

• A dedicated Military Family Liaison to assist with enrollment, school records, and academic placement
• Social and emotional support for students transitioning from other schools
• Flexible scheduling for parent-teacher meetings, knowing that duty schedules can vary
• Extracurricular activities to help students quickly connect with peers
• Strong partnerships with local military bases and support organizations

• 2 Proofs of residency (e.g., housing assignment or lease)
• Student's birth certificate
• Immunization records
• Academic records/transcripts (if available)
• Any Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plans, if applicable
• Parent/Guardian Identification
• Military orders (for residency and enrollment priority)

Supporting Transitions – Building Connections

At Canutillo Middle School Steam Academy, we understand that changing schools due to military moves can be a big adjustment for students. That’s why we offer a Military Child & Youth Sponsorship Program—a peer-to-peer support system designed to help new military-connected students feel welcomed, supported, and connected from the moment they arrive.

What the Program Offers:

• Student Sponsors: Current students are trained to welcome and mentor incoming military-connected peers, offering friendship, campus tours, and guidance during the first weeks at school.

• Smooth Transitions: We help new students get familiar with school routines, activities, and resources quickly and comfortably.
• Opportunities to Get Involved: New students are encouraged to explore clubs, sports, and extracurriculars that match their interests and help them build a sense of belonging.
• Community Connection: Our program also creates opportunities for families to connect through school events and resources tailored for military families.
